As Chair of the Diocesan Board of Education, I am glad to be able to join you on this Education Sunday, particularly because we are at a critical time in education, nationally and locally. In the four years I have chaired the Board, I have become increasingly convinced of the potential of schools — particularly our 97 church schools — to be at the heart of our mission. Nationally I million children attend a Church of England school everyday, seven times more than are involved in weekly based church activities.

God loves growth. He loves growth in people. The human body is designed for growth. Various growth hormones are released at special times in the human life cycle so that children grow. There are growth plates in bones. As the growth plates lengthen, bones, skin, muscles, tendons, and ligaments grow with the bones. In addition, God has placed in our minds an insatiable curiosity that spurs our brains to grow and expand in knowledge.
